Chapter 4
Comparative Analysis
of the International Status of Acoustic
Emission Equipment Performance
Testing
Junjiao Zhang, Gongtian Shen, Yilin Yuan, Yongna Shen, and Zhanwen Wu
Abstract The good performance of acoustic emission equipment is an important
guarantee for the reliability of test results. With the continuous improvement of the
research and development technology of acoustic emission instruments and sensors,
the performance testing methods and standards are also constantly improving. The
international status of acoustic emission instruments and sensors performance testing
was introduced. In terms of testing standards, a detailed comparison was carried out.
The commonalities and differences of test methods in various countries were put
forward to provide references for testers and users of acoustic emission equipment.
4.1 Introduction
Acoustic emission (AE) is a dynamic inspection method that detects the energy
emitted by the object itself. It has the advantages of online inspection, insensitive
to the geometry of the object, and able to detect defects in the whole structure. AE
technology is suitable for on-line monitoring and early or near-damage prediction of
industrial processes. The beginning of AE technology is marked by Kaiser’s research
work in Germany in the early 1950. After more than 60 years of development, AE
technology has been widely used in petrochemical, electric power, aerospace, transportation, machinery manufacturing, construction and other industries. AE equipment is the carrier for the implementation of AE detection. AE instruments and
sensors are the core equipment for testing and detection. Their performance directly
affects the ability of AE detection and the accuracy of the testing results. In order to
ensure the effectiveness and reliability of AE testing, the performance testing of AE
instruments and sensors is particularly important.
