Chapter 3
About an Initial Draft of a Standard
Concerning Sensitivity Verification
of Acoustic Emission Sensors
Hartmut Vallen
Abstract This paper summarizes an initial draft for a new standard submitted to
ISO TC 135 SC 9 (acoustic emission). The draft comprises 30 pages. Only the basics
can be treated in this compressed format.
3.1 Introduction
This paper briefly describes an initial draft of a standard, submitted to ISO, Technical
Committee (TC) 135, Subcommittee (SC) 9, acoustic emission (AE), as a new work
item proposal (NWIP). The scope of the NWIP is reproduced in next chapter.
In the introduction the draft lists the three existing ISO standards for acoustic
emission (AE) sensor calibration: ISO 12713:1998 [1], ISO 12714:1999 [2],
ISO/TR 13115:2011 [3] and explains why another standard is urgently needed: The
two of 1998 and 1999 are obviously outdated, the third is not a normative document and controversial discussed. It also must be stated that the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA), the only neutral offerer of primary AE
sensor calibration in the western world, has discontinued such offer to external clients
some years ago. Within ISO TC135 SC9 a revision of ISO 12714 has been started
but stopped in 2017 due to the non-availability of new primary calibrated reference
sensors. Some long existing AE organizations may still operate a working verification setup according to ISO 12714, but younger or new organizations interested
in performing AE applications do have serious problems due to the absence of a
practicable sensor sensitivity verification standard: Many standards for AE applications specify the needed sensor sensitivity, hence each AE sensor manufacturer,
but also each AE service provider must ensure that the sensors sold and used meet
those requirements. Since no international up-to-date standard for determining the
sensor sensitivity exists, such a verification is rather difficult and the creation of such
a standard is an urgent matter.
