Abstract Acoustic emission testing (AE) on storage tank floor is a beneficial method
for tank owners to obtain information about possible corrosion or even leakage of
the floor without opening the tank, so it is widely used. However, it can be seen from
the literature published internationally that different countries or different companies have great differences in parameter setting and data evaluation methods when
performing AE testing on the oil tank floor, which can lead to different results. Nowadays there is no universal standard on AE test procedure and data evaluation methods
for oil tank floor testing. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the difference in
AE testing of tank floor, especially in parameter setting and data processing method,
in order to provide a guideline for peers.
29.1 Introduction
Aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) are widely used in petroleum industry.
PetroChina Pipeline Company has more than 200 large-scale ASTs and there are
more tanks will be constructed in next several years. If it carries on the conventional
tank maintenance plan, a lot of money will be wasted, because there are many “good”
tanks found during the maintenance [1]. So how to evaluate the corrosion situation
of tank floor and provide maintenance guidance for storage tank floors is an urgent
problem.
AE provides an advanced method to inspect the tank floor while filled with the
oil and enables tank operator to monitor tank condition in-service [2]. AE are stress
waves produced by sudden release of the elastic energy in stressed materials. When
defect-related processes such as corrosion, crack growth, hydrogen blistering, and
leakage and so on take place in and on the tank floor, stress waves will be produced.
