Acoustic Emission
in Coatings—A Review
Yachen Zhang, Jia Meng, Liang Wang, and Lixin Song
Abstract Coating is fabricated on the substrate to protect the entire material. The
failure of coatings can cause damage to material or structure. Acoustic emission (AE),
as a non-destructive testing technology, can be used to get mechanical parameters and
clarify the failure mechanisms. In this paper, metal coatings, ceramic coatings and
thermal barrier coatings were taken as examples to introduce the research progress,
existing problems and application prospects of acoustic emission technology on
coatings.
23.1 Introduction
With the development of science and technology, people’s requirements for the use
of materials continue to increase. For general materials, it is often difficult to satisfy
multiple conditions. The emergence of composite materials and coatings solved this
