power, and at the right wavelength, the correct optics to deliver the light (e.g. fibers or
diffusers), and subsequently collect the light (e.g. lenses and filters) onto a detector
or camera. It is also very much desired to develop brighter and more photostable
chromophores which can help in fully exploiting the potential of these methods.
Another key challenge that requires significant attention of the scientific community is minimizing the attenuation and scattering losses in biological tissues. Wide
utilization of light sources and detectors in the infrared region could be an option to
tackle this aspect. Despite these challenges, optical techniques have growing roles
in molecular imaging research and clinical translation. Still, a lot of work needs to
be done to fully appreciate the potential of these methods to unravel some of the
lingering biological mysteries.
