Supervisor’s Foreword
For her Ph.D. research, Ritika Dusad invented an ultra-sensitive, spin noise
spectrometer and used it to discover the magnetic noise signature of emergent
magnetic monopoles in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 . Her vision for how to search for the monopoles
was highly innovative. The elegance and simplicity of the design of her
superconducting quantum interference device based spectrometer is striking and
continues to inform the design of next generation experiments. The sensitivity of all
her experimental measurements was at the limit of physical possibility and deeply
impressive. Her realization of the correct microscopic theory underpinning her
discoveries was inspiring. Ritika Dusad has that rare combination of wide scientific
curiosity, sharp focus on objectives, brilliant intuition, and agile execution of her
research plans. Perhaps even most impressive is her independence, her supply of
new ideas, her enthusiasm for new challenges, and her delight in discovery. It was
a highly rewarding experience and a great privilege to have Ritika Dusad as a
colleague, and I very much look forward to renewing these experiences in future
research projects.
