“The Neutrino” where they discussed ways to detect the neutrino particle,
basing their estimates on Fermi’s theory. Bethe and Peierls also considered the
possibility that the neutrino may have a magnetic moment of its own and
thereby can leave an ionization track in the medium. Even though the neutrino
was a neutral particle like the neutron, it certainly could have a magnetic
moment since the neutron has magnetic moment. The Bethe–Peierls paper
was published in Nature in 1934. They claimed that the neutrino interactions
were so tiny that it is impossible to detect this particle. A quote from an article
by Bethe and Bacher in 1936 can be seen in Fig. 8.1.
