By looking at Figure 6-1, you can see that (v 2 - v,) and (x 2 - *i) are the two
sides of the right triangle made by connecting the two arbitrary points The
ratio of the sides,
is the slope of the curve, this ratio has the same
value whether the two arbitrary points are taken close together or far apart It
is for this reason that m is said to be the "slope" of the line
