40. The adsorbing capacity of charcoal may be greatly increased by "steam activation." The principal action of the steam passing over the very hot charcoal
is to widen the pores as the result of the reaction
H 2 O + C -^ H 2 + CO
The mixture of CO and H 2 , known as water gas, can be used as a fuel for other
manufacturing concerns, as well as to heat up the coke for this process.
(a) How many cubic feet of water gas at 730 torr and 68°F are obtained from
the activation of 50.0 tons of charcoal if it is activated to a 60% weight
loss?
(b) How many gallons of water (density = I g/ml) will this take?
41. What volume of water gas (CO 2 + Hj) can be prepared from 1500 liters of
steam at 900°C and 1 atm? (The steam and water gas are measured under the
same conditions. See Problem 40 for the equation.)
42. In the contact process for making H 2 SO 4 , S is burned with air to SO 2 , and the
SO 2 -air mixture is then passed over a V 2 O 5 catalyst, which converts it to SO 3 :
S + O 2 ^» SO 2
2SO 2 + O 2 -^ 2SO 3
(a) What volume of air (21% O 2 ) at 27°C and 1.00 atm is needed for the
conversion of 1.00 ton of sulfur to SO 3 ? (Use a 15% excess of oxygen.)
(b) How many gallons of H 2 SO 4 (95% H 2 SO 4 by weight, density = 1.84 g/ml)
can be produced from 1.00 ton of sulfur?
43. A common biological determination is for amino-acid nitrogen. This determination is made by the van Slyke method, in which the amino groups (-NH 2 ) in
protein material react with HNO 2 to produce N 2 gas, the volume of which is
measured. A 0.530 g sample of a biological material containing glycine,
CH 2 (NH 2 )COOH, yields 37.2 ml of N 2 gas collected over water at a pressure
of 737 torr and 27°C. What is the percentage of glycine in the original sample?
The reaction is
CH 2 (NH 2 )COOH + HNO 2 -> CH 2 (OH)COOH + H 2 O + N 2
