Ascertainment of Ecological Footprint …
81
On this note, considering the increased level of energy use and economic advancement of China the author wishes to investigate ecological footprint performance of
China amidst massive energy utilization and population growth. In order to effectively
execute this current study some important variables such as energy use, population,
and agriculture are adopted to test the ecological footprint of China. Also, ecological
footprint was adopted as proxy to the environment (ecology). Different scholars have
investigated the position of China in global climate change using different variables
such as carbon emission and greenhouse gas (ghg) emission. Ecological footprint
has been proved to be the better option in measuring the environment performance
because of its components such as carbon footprint, built-up land, cropland, grazing
land, forest land, and fishing grounds [9, 11, 26, 38].
The rest sections of this study will be theoretical background, data and methodology, empirical analyses and result presentations, and conclusion and policy
framing.
2 Literature and Theoretical Background
2.1 Literature Review
Several scholars have actually investigated ecological footprint and Kuznets with a
combination of the selected variables. Al-Mulali et al. [2] studied ecological footprint with ecological Kuznets curve (EKC) and found EKC for the countries of
researched on. Bagliani et al. [4] researched on the ecological footprint of Italy
and found a breakeven total balance. Solarin and Bello [32] also researched the
ecological footprint of 128 developed and developing economies and found non
U-shaped of the EKC. Kivyiro and Arminen [14] investigated the carbon emission
with economic growth and foreign direct investment, and they found EKC for the
countries they researched on. Ozturk et al. [20] also researched EKC for the middle
and higher income, and found negative relationship between ecological footprint and
the explanatory variables. Yu-ming [42] studied the guangxi ecological footprint and
energy use, and found a U-shaped curve ecological footprint. Neequaye and Oladi
[19] researched on economic growth and foreign direct investment (FDI) and found
EKC. Xu and Lin [41] researched on China carbon emission and found EKC for
China. Ahmed and Long [1] studied Pakistan environmental performance and found
EKC for Pakistan. Sarkodie and Strezov [28] researched on Brics and found EKC
for India and South Africa. Shahbaz et al. [31] studied the implication of energy
consumption on Bangladesh and found the selected variables impacting the positively on emission. Ullah et al. [37] investigate the implication of agricultural policy
on environment and found agriculture impacting Pakistan environment.
