Examples were also provided of alternative binding agents that have been used
in environmental analysis and that may be used in future work with emerging contaminants in water. These alternative agents included aptamers, serum albumin, and
boronates. Based on the variety of binding agents and formats that have already been
used in environmental testing, it is expected that affinity chromatography and related
methods will continue to grow in use and play an even larger role in the future for
the detection of contaminants in wastewater and related samples.
