glucuronic acid groups can be cleaved from the backbone by α-arabinofuranosidase
and α-glucuronidase, respectively. Acetylxylan esterase deacetylates xylose residues, while the ferulic acid esterase cleaves the ester linkage between arabinose and
ferulic acid residues. In case of mannan, the backbone-hydrolyzing enzymes are
β-mannanase, β-glucosidase, and β-mannosidase, whereas enzymes such as
acetylmannan esterase and α-galactosidase remove side-chain substituents attached
to the backbone of mannans.
