GLOSSARY
305
metals are removed, and the remaining combustible portion of
the solid waste is chopped or shredded.
Reserves: Proved reserves; well-identified resources that can be
profitably extracted and utilized with existing technology.
Residues: Bark and woody materials that are generated in primary
wood-using mills when round wood products are converted to
other products.
Residual oil: Oil that cannot be recovered from a conventional oil
reservoir after application of primary, secondary and enhanced
oil recovery techniques.
Residuum (pi. residua, also known as resid or resids): The nonvolatile portion of petroleum that remains as residue after
refinery distillation; hence, atmospheric residuum, vacuum
residuum.
Resource: The total amount of a commodity (usually a mineral but
can include non-minerals such as water and petroleum) that
has been estimated to be ultimately available.
Rock matrix: The granular structure of a rock or porous medium.
Rotation: Period of years between establishment of a stand of timber and the time when it is considered ready for final harvest
and regeneration.
Round wood products: Logs and other round timber generated
from harvesting trees for industrial or consumer use.
Royalty: An interest in an oil and gas lease that gives the owner of
the interest the right to receive a portion of the production from
the leased acreage (or of the proceeds of the sale of production),
but generally does not require the owner to pay any portion of
the costs of drilling or operating the wells on the leased acreage; royalties may be either landowner's royalties, which are
reserved by the owner of the leased acreage at the time the lease
is granted, or overriding royalties, which are usually reserved
by an owner of the leasehold in connection with a transfer to a
subsequent owner.
Run-of-the-river reservoirs: Reservoirs with a large rate of flowthrough compared to their volume.
S
Sand: A course granular mineral mainly comprising quartz grains
that is derived from the chemical and physical weathering of
rocks rich in quartz, notably sandstone and granite.
