5.3 Case Studies for Determining the Potential of Renewable Hydrogen …
69
• Solar PV capacity is the installed solar PV capacity in TW obtained from the
“Renewable capacity statistics 2019” (IRENA 2019).
For the estimation of the yearly generation of electricity from wind power, the
following formula was used:
W ind generation = P r wt ∗ N umber of re f erence wind turbines ∗ 8760
(5.2)
Where:
• W ind generation is the electricity generation during a year in TWh y −1 .
• P r wt is power produced by one reference wind turbine in TW, as per formula
(5.3).
• N umber of re f erence wind turbines is the total wind power installed capacity divided by the nameplate nominal power of the reference wind turbine, as
per formula (5.4)
• 8760 in hours of operation per year (assumed).
P r wt =
1
2 ∗ ρ ∗ A ∗ c P ∗ ν 3
1 ∗ 10 12
(5.3)
Where:
• ρ is the density of air assumed to be uniformly of 1,23 kg/m 3 across all the
case studies.
• A is the swept area of the reference wind turbine in m 2 , as per formula (5.5).
• c P is the unitless capacity factor of the reference wind turbine. The capacity
factor is assumed to be of 0.367 for onshore wind and 0.5 for offshore wind
in all study cases.
• ν is the case studies specific average wind speed in m/s. The average wind
speed is obtained from the “Global Wind Atlas 3.0”, a free, web-based application developed, owned and operated by the Technical University of Denmark
(DTU). The Global Wind Atlas 3.0 is released in partnership with the World
Bank Group, utilizing data provided by Vortex, using funding provided by the
Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) (Global Wind Atlas
n.d.).
