In the following, my purpose is not to critically examine everything that has been published in
this particular field, but to provide the reader with (i) an overview and guide to the existing literature
and (ii) some comments, suggestions, and caveats regarding the implementation of each of these
techniques. Some stress is put on what is specific to the use of APols rather than other surfactants. In
particular, at variance with small surfactant such as detergents (see Hiruma-Shimizu et al. 2015), APols
can be relatively easily labeled either isotopically or with colored and/or fluorescent ligands. As a rule,
because of the relatively large size of APol molecules, their colloidal properties are not significantly
affected by the labeling (see Chap. 4, § 4.4). This makes it easy to use, for instance, radioactive or
colored APols to follow the distribution of the polymer in a sucrose gradient or upon elution from a
SEC column, or deuterated APols to contrast-match the surfactant and eliminate its contribution in
SANS studies of MPs or MP complexes.

Overview of the Literature
A compact overview of the literature is presented in Table 9.1. Publications that present strongly
complementary data have been lumped together into a single study, studies being listed in the order of
appearance of the first publication. For each study, the following information is provided:
DLS dynamic light scattering, EM electron microscopy, FRET Förster resonance energy transfer, LMNG
2,2-didecylpropane-1,3-bis-β-D-maltopyranoside, MS mass spectrometry, ND protein-stabilized nanodisc,
SANS small-angle neutron scattering, SAXS small-angle X-ray scattering, SEC size exclusion chromatography, SGSV sucrose gradient sedimentation velocity, SMA poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), SMALPs
SMA/lipid particles, STEM scanning transmission electron microscopy. Abbreviations for the proteins
and for APols are defined in columns 2 and 3 of the table, respectively. The chemical structures of the
various APols used are described in Chap. 4, § 4.2.
