G. Jha et al.
9.5 SimaPro
It is one of the leading software tools widely being used since 2003, among the
LCA specialists. It has one of the largest databases such as ecoinvent, industryspecific Agri-footprint database, and the ELCD database, U.S. Life Cycle Inventory
Database (USLCI), Danish Input-Output Database 99, etc. The software becomes
more efficient when you feed a transparent, real, and high-quality inventory data
[61].
9.6 One-Click LCA
One-click LCA is a software tool that automates the assessment task to calculate the
carbon footprint and other environmental impacts.
10 Summary
The chapter introduced us about terms like carbon footprint, assessment, LCA, their
application for various areas. Additionally, the chapter possibly delivered the answers
of questions such as why assessment is needed, why LCA, how LCA works, and all
the associated principles. Carbon footprint assessment is a very common understanding nowadays but when you dig deeper to find their reach and impacts, you
will find out that our environment is getting significantly affected by these footprints. Moreover, these emissions are not just increasing in numbers, it is rising
serious threats to the environment as well as humanity by alleviating earth’s atmospheric temperature, which causes climate change. In a nutshell, our activities have
disturbed the overall system for which the world is looking for answers. The chapter
has also highlighted some key issues that are the result of increased carbon footprint
and the collective measure to reduce the footprint.
LCA is merely a tool or approach to calculate and analyze the carbon footprint
of any product, process, system, organization, service, etc. It is more likely an environmental management and decision support tool. LCA is presently being used for
almost every application for other footprints as well such as water, food, energy, etc.
In this chapter, the LCA approach is used to qualitatively assess the overall earth’s
carbon footprint, the comparative footprint of biomass (renewable) and coke (fossil
fuel), and others.
Acknowledgements The authors are thankful to the researchers, which are referred to in the
article for their indirect contribution to this chapter and direct contribution to the carbon footprint
assessment. It is really difficult to name each one but, I believe a collective acknowledgment will
be appreciated.
