7.2 Inventory Generation
Now there comes the second stage of the LCA that is inventory preparation. Inventory
is the most important factor of the LCA because it serves the ranges and limits of
the campaign. For example, while discussing the footprint, how to tell the exact
extent which is acceptable or not. In simpler form, inventory is something that gives
quantification to the study. The inventory preparation is simpler while talking about a
process or product because that is made up of some parameters. When the assessment
is as big as the world’s carbon footprint, the inventory generation becomes a huge
and time-intensive task. However, when the goal and scopes are defined, inventory
preparation becomes a bit relaxing.
I will present an example that will explain the statement. Suppose, you have given
10,000 currency (of any country), and you have to buy the groceries but you don’t have
the list of the things. Now you may feel some difficulty, even when you know that it
is groceries that you have to buy. Similarly, the assessment here is very extensive and
not activity specific and thus will comprise all the datasets pertaining to the carbon
footprint that is presented in the previous sections. These datasets belong to the total
carbon emissions being released into the environment from different countries and
sectors. In other words, these datasets are going to serve as the inventory for the
present study. The datasets represent the footprint of the individual product, process,
individual’s lifestyle, and the proposed moderations that are proposed in order to
sustain the constraints being prioritized by the EPA’s.
7.3 Impact Assessment
Now as we have acquired the inventory, the next step comes in is the impact assessment linked to the inventory. Let us explain this step with the help of a simpler
example. If you remember the previous example which was about grocery shopping
without a list. Now imagine, you accepted the challenge and went shopping with
10,000 bucks and without a list. What will happen? The only thing you will be able
to do is randomly collect items that you seem necessary or the most essential ones but
there are chances that the items are different from the expected ones. You may also
face difficulty in selecting items to made them fit in the budget but you are going to
fail to do so. These are the phenomena that happen with a faulty goal/scope/inventory,
and these phenomena or occurrences are the impacts, and the stage assessing it is
going to be called the impact assessment. Similarly, in the present context, we are
going to discuss the impacts that are being advanced during the assessment or the
implications made from this study.
Carbon footprint is an outcome of the human activities like globalization, expansion of industries, forest land acquisition, deforestation, excessive load on the
resources, utilization of fossil fuels, open combustion, lavish lifestyle, dependency
over high-carbon input technologies, absence of sustainability and greener mediums,
