Carbon Footprint Assessment with LCA Methodology
9
ISO 14067 deals with the Greenhouse gases and the carbon footprint of products
which assesses the emissions released during the lifecycle of the product. The lifecycle starts from the raw materials and ends at the “end-of-life” stage. The productbased LCA can be further divided into two parts that are; (a) cradle to gate, and (b)
cradle to grave. Former measures the emissions from the raw material zone to the
factory gate whereas the latter measure it from the raw material zone to the final
disposal through product usage. Identification of the product LCA adhering to the
standard can help you with finding the flaws in the system highlighting emission
hotspots. Such types of assessments are equally fruitful for the manufacturer, clients,
and, general public to obtain a benchmark against other products.
The product carbon labeling started in 2007, intending to let the users know about
the footprint of the product being used.
Goals associated with the product carbon footprint
• To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions
• To identify the hotspots producing more and more emissions
• To manifest transparency to the product and their footprint
• To develop such products complying with international standards, regulations,
and guidelines.
Since standardization in the last decade, LCA has become an environment
management tool and also becomes an essential decision support tool in business,
regulations, and policymaking, etc. LCA has also been involved in processes such as
product and process improvement and design, environmental management, emission
footprints auditing, resource management, best technology selection, etc. With this
wide applicability, LCA can be considered as the sustainability assessment tool.
LCA is divided into four stages for assessing a product
Defining goal and scope: It includes defining the objective and the system boundaries
of the product. The strategies for data collection and inventory generation and the
evaluation methods are discussed in the stage. Additionally, an initial adjustment in
the system boundaries and the parameters also takes place here.
Data Collection and treatment: Collection of data by measurements, calculations,
literary evidence, peer reviews, the database search is performed in the stage.
Assessment: Incorporates normalization, classification, and assessment.
Interpretation: Involves sensitivity and reliability analysis and their assessment for
technological feasibility.
6.2 Code for Impactful Conduct of LCA [36]
LCA is a significant and primary tool for the sustainability study and emerged
with very wide applications from the last decades. Furthermore, LCA is a decisionsupporting tool too. However, LCA also inherits some limitations and that is very
