on conventional fossil fuels like coal and coke. Although the scientific fraternity
is recommending the usage of renewable biomass fuels in place of fossil fuels, that
requires a due course and extensive research. Before implicating such a big change in
the present system, it is essential to identify the present impact of coal/coke usage on
the environment [7–10]. This is where carbon emission assessment necessitates for
metallurgical applications. The metallurgical sector is not the only cause; various
other industries also contribute to the global footprints. The chapter will assess
various processes that are major carbon footprint contributors with the help of a life
cycle methodology. The questions such as; how to perform an assessment, where it
executes, and with what obvious tools, will get answered, as the chapter will proceed
further. The information presented in the chapter will be felt more intriguing when
the readers will find the interconnection among environmental and technological
goals referring to the carbon footprint. The chapter can be read with the presented
roadmap highlighting a detailed interest of the individual parts. The following are
the details of the individual sections.
Chapter 2—Carbon footprint: The section discusses the carbon footprint, their
origin, critical concerns, and current trends.
Chapter 3—Environmental concern and regulations for carbon footprint:
Carbon footprint comes up with a variety of long-term environmental concerns,
which are being highlighted in the section. The section is tried to maintain short
without compromising with the key information.
Chapter 4—Probable mitigation of these concerns: The concerns raised by
increased footprints are getting severe with time and that has to be stopped with
sustainable developments. The section presents certain points that may help in
reducing these footprints.
Chapter 5—Need for an assessment: Carbon footprint needs an assessment prior
to their mitigation stages because it may face difficulties when you do not have
proper limits. There comes the need for the assessment. The section highlights the
background and interest requiring assessment.
Chapter 6—Lifecycle assessment: The section discusses LCA and their methodology details, providing following information (a) evolution of LCA and the purpose
of the study, (b) code for impactful conduct of LCA, (c) learning objectives of LCA,
and (d) types of LCA.
Chapter 7—LCA methodology in terms of carbon footprint assessment: The
section presents an LCA assessment for the global carbon footprint including all the
details of goal and scope, inventory generation, impact assessment, and interpretation.
Chapter 8—Other LCA examples: The section integrates various other assessments
for industries like construction, textiles, metallurgical operations, municipal wastes,
etc.
Chapter 9—Tools and software’s used for LCA: The section discusses the various
software solution to pursue assessment.
