Fig. 8.5 Biomass growth curve for the determination of half-velocity constant K (for batch study
with municipal wastewater)
in Fig. 8.5 of Annexure VI-a. A vertical intercept equals μ max / 2, is drawn intersecting
the “μ” versus “S w ” curve at a point, wherefrom a perpendicular can be drawn to get
the value of “K s ” as shown in Fig. 8.5.
It is evident from Fig. 8.5, μ max =0.265 h
−1 =6.36 day
−1 , K s = 12 mg/l =
0.012 mg/cc.
8.2.2.2 Determination of K and Y
In order to determine the k, substrate mass balance in hybrid bioreactor at steady-state
condition was considered. As a result, from the model equation of substrate mass
balance, different values of Xθ S w /{(S 0 -S w )(K s + S w )} were plotted against θ /(S 0 −
S w ) corresponding to different hydraulic retention times, different MLSS and COD
concentrations (Ref. Sect. 3.2, Chapter 3).
Now, the values of θ /(S 0 − S w ) and Xθ S w /{(S 0 −S w )(K s + S w )} are shown in
Fig. 8.6.
