of thiolated β-cyclodextrin and alkanethiols was partly similar. Relatively large scattered grains of CdSe could be deposited into the monolayer defects [386], but the
internal cavity of the β-cyclodextrin was the preferred deposition site for Te [387].
For monolayered formed on dithiols, the nucleation took place exclusively on the
top of the SAM [388]. The thoughtful design of the nucleus density and the nucleus
size could be implemented with the above-mentioned methods in exceptional cases
only.
Binary SAMs can be used as deposition template if one of the components can be
selectively stripped off and the remaining layer is stable under the circumstances of
the subsequent deposition step(s). This behaviour was well identified for the mixed
monolayer composed of 3-mercaptopropionic acid and 1-dodecanethiol [389, 390].
By using Ag(111) as substrate, it was shown that 3-mercaptopropionic acid can
be stripped off cathodically at less negative potentials than 1-dodecanethiol, and
the patterned dodecanethiol sub-monolayer obtained with the removal of the coadsorbent can be used as deposition template. Since the thiolated alkane monolayer
cannot be exposed to very negative potentials by retaining its intactness, the deposition probe was CdS by using the EC-ALD technique (see Chap. 4). The deposit
thickness was proportional to the number of the EC-ALD cycles. As an obvious
consequence of the template formation technique, the nucleus density is proportional to the surface occupation ratio of the monolayer component stripped off, and
both the shape and the relative position of the nanodots deposited are randomly
situated at the surface.
