The Fe(II) compound used was always FeCl 2 ·4H 2 O, while both FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O [44]
and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O [42, 43, 47] were suitable Fe(III) compounds. For the reaction
medium, ethanol-based [47] and aqueous [42–44] solutions were applied.
In addition to the synthesis of the nanoparticles themselves, various stabilizing
agents were also tested in the above-mentioned works. In each study, a clear difference was found between the size distribution of the particles synthesized in additivefree and stabilizer-doped solution and, surprisingly, the stabilized particles were
always larger. An example for the stabilizer-induced size change is shown in Fig. 9.3.
