The marriage took place on July 16, 1879. The marriage certificate shows
the signatures of the parents Kapteyn and the mother of Elise Kalshoven. The
witnesses were: ‘Johan Christaan Kalshoven, freight forwarding agent, thirtyfive years of age, living in Rotterdam, brother of the bride, Simon Brouwer,
notary, forty-six years of age, living in Maarssen, brother-in-law of the bride,
Henrik van den Broeke, cashier, forty years of age, living here and William
Burck, teacher at a Hoogere Burgerschool [HBS], thirty-two years of age, living
in Apeldoorn.’ Simon Brouwer was the person who originally brought Jacobus
