This picture is from Hertzsprung–Kapteyn’s biography [1]
delayed by the heavy earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco (where the telescope
structure was produced). He suggested that Kapteyn come and visit once the
telescope was ready and to make observations with the 60 in., and later with
the 100 in. telescope. And in a letter from March of that year Hale promised
that they can certainly work together.
The Hale Archives, kept at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech),
contain a letter from Kapteyn dated 12 June 1907. It refers to a proposal Hale
apparently had made to him the day before, which came as a complete surprise
to Kapteyn. There is also a telegram from Kapteyn, dated 9/6/1907, which was
stored in the Archives as if this meant September 6th. In fact, it is dated June
9th. In it Kapteyn confirms that he will be at the Hotel de l’Europe on Tuesday
at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Indeed, June 11th, the day before Kapteyn’s letter,
