predominantly male or female. He found no special result that could not easily
be explained by prejudice. Maybe Kapteyn’s staff contributed to this as well.
Although Kapteyn and Heymans were good friends, they often had different opinions, but when it came to women’s suffrage, they were on one line.
Heymans lobbied more actively for women’s suffrage, but Kapteyn was certainly involved in Heymans’ circle of acquaintances who worked for women’s
emancipation. It is also remarkable that Kapteyn was the first astronomer in
the Netherlands with a female Ph.D. student, Etine Imke Smid (1883–1960).
She obtained her Ph.D. degree in 1914, unfortunately with a not very impressive dissertation. Henriette Hertzsprung–Kapteyn (Fig. 8.4) [1] continues her
