at the top means ‘Here lived and worked 1910-1918’, and under Kapteyn’s name
‘Inspiring Groningen astronomer’. The year 1918 (taken from his daughter Henriette
Hertzsprung–Kapteyn’s biography [1]) is incorrect and should read 1920.
My English translation of the French text is
‘If you don’t have what you love,
then you must love what you have.’
This quote is attributed to the French writer of historical articles and memoirs
Roger de Rabutin, Count of Bussy (1618–1693), also known as Roger BussyRabutin.
