Star Streams
Everything flows.
Heraclitus (c. 540–c. 480BC)
The wonder is not that the field of the stars is so vast,
but that man has measured it.
Anatole France (1844–1924)

The children were growing up, so by the end of the 1880s the Kapteyns had
moved to an upstairs apartment in the Heerestraat (first number S 6a, later
113a; see Fig. 4.7, 4). When exactly they moved there is not known; in 1891
they lived there according to the records of the Groninger Archives, while in
1885 they had moved to the Oosterstraat 42 (see Fig. 4.7, 3). Their third child,
Gerrit Jacobus, had been born in 1883 and the need for more space must have
been the reason behind the moves. In 1899 they bought a country house in
Vries, about 15 km south of Groningen. The house still exists; it now has the
address Tynaarlosestraat 58 (in the time of the Kapteyns it was district A 22a)
and it bears the name ‘De Burcht’ (the castle). Whether this name already
existed in the Kapteyn period is not clear according to the current owners; in
the notarial deeds the name appears for the first time in 1947. It is a detached
‘Panta rhei’, sometimes also translated as ‘everything moves’.
Anatole France, born François-Anatole Thibault, was a French poet and novelist. Translation by Alfred
Allinson.
