on were understood as covered by natural sciences, but also medical science
was included. A short history of the KNG in Dutch can be found in the
bicentennial publication of 2001, Een spiegel der wetenschap [66], but see also

Shortly after he arrived in Groningen in 1878, Kapteyn was already giving
lectures for this Society. In one of his letters to his fiancée, he wrote that he had
been very nervous before giving his first lecture, but that things had gone well.
That lecture took place on November 28, 1878 and covered a whole range
of subjects. The title was About the relationship between different stellar systems
and more specifically about the clusters of stars, the binary and multiple stars, the
Galaxy and the nebulae. So he treated pretty much everything outside the Solar
System. More lectures followed on comets, astronomical accuracy and falling
