Chapter 3
The Challenges of Energy Supply
Abstract Energy, both internal and external, is required at every stage of human
life. The formative years count on food and oxygen for survival and growth, whereas
the latter part of life is more dependent on external energy sources. Experience
so far indicates that both internal as well as external energy play crucial part in
human development. Since independence, India’s record of health, education, and
access to commercial energy has been unsatisfactory and it’s time to adopt out of the
box strategy for ensuring high energy supply to achieve and sustain higher trajectory economy. There are many impediments for improving the energy productivity
including raw material (for nuclear energy), technical feasibility, finances, public
opposition and demonstrations, water and land rights, environmental clearances, and
legal cases for thermal and hydro that need to be resolved to exploit full potential.
Keywords Per capita electricity consumption · GDP and energy · Household
electrification · Electrified villages · Energy access and security
3.1 The Understanding and Perception
The word ‘energy’ referred to in this chapter encompasses all kinds of energy tapped
from various sources for the survival, growth, and development of human beings and
is not restricted to electricity generated and supplied by government, individuals, and
groups, either public or private sector.
All living beings on this planet need energy from the beginning of their creation.
We start breathing as soon as we are born, and the oxygen so absorbed by iron
molecule (of hemoglobin) starts energizing the body. In plants the role of iron is
substituted by magnesium which forms the core of chlorophyll. In layman’s understanding, the process of human development is associated with the health of a living
body, that is, the quality and quantity of food an individual takes that helps in physical
and mental growth and prevents malfunctioning of the body as well as premature
death. Medical science tells us that if we can overcome any health issues during the
initial years of our lives, the chances are that we will have longer life and better
resistance in the later years.
