5.2 Readiness for Low/Zero Carbon Growth
It has been more than 30 years that many of us were made conversant with the term
global warming. Subsequent scientific and other reports persuaded us to make a
sincere and time-bound effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately,
little worthwhile has been achieved despite international conventions and declarations, laws, policies, and rhetoric. The following factual details support the foregoing
argument:
1. The world oil production has been on the rise (Fig. 5.3):
2. The global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is on the rise (Fig. 5.4):
3. Carbon dioxide emission from use of coal, oil and gas is on the rise (Fig. 5.5):
4. Global trend in carbon dioxide concentration and sea water pH indicate worsening
scenario (Fig. 5.6):
5. Global average temperature is rising (Fig. 5.7):
6. By mid-2090s, the global sea level is projected to reach 0.22–0.44 mm above
1990 levels (Fig. 5.8).
