trucks and vans are expected to be added to the vehicle stock. Natural gas, though
versatile and low in environmental footprint, will play a relatively minor role in the
Indian energy mix due to its high price that does not allow it to replace coal or coal
sooner (India Energy Outlook 2015).
The supply of adequate and affordable power has to overcome numerous internal
as well as external dynamics to improve the reliability, quality, and integration with
renewable energy technologies. India’s high dependency on various countries for
fuel procurement, technology cooperation, and import and flow of investment will
be crucial. By 2020, India will be the largest importer of coal in the world and will
have one-sixth of global solar photovoltaic capacity by 2040. One may not appreciate
at this moment, but in all likelihood, India will have to face international criticism
for spewing venom through carbon dioxide (Fig. 3.44) emission.
