CHAPTER 13
Beyond Wind: New Challenges
to the Expansion of Renewables in Denmark
Luis Boscán, Brooks A. Kaiser, and Lars Ravn-Jonsen
Introduction
Denmark functions as a world-class example in the transformation of
energy systems and in the integration of variable renewable energy sources
into electricity systems. Over four decades, the country has transitioned
from a fossil-fuel dependent energy economy to a renewable powerhouse.
The share of renewables in Denmark’s gross final energy consumption has
gone from 1.4% in 1972 to 32.6% at the end of 2017 (Danish Energy
Agency 2018d).
