5.3.2.1 Suspension Polymerization
Suspension polymerization is a radical polymerization process in which the monomer mixture is dispersed in water, containing a suspension stabilizer, by stirring.
The stirring helps keep the monomer drops separated in the aqueous dispersant,
which leads to a uniform suspension with a narrow particle size distribution. The
polymerization takes place within the monomer droplets, being the product formed
insoluble in water. During polymerization, immiscible drops are slowly converted
into a viscous material and when they reach a sufficiently high Mw, they give rise to

approaches, such as (a) emulsion polymerization, (b) solid-phase synthesis and (c) the core-shell
approach
