US Policy Toward the Caspian Sea Legal Status
The promotion of security in the Caspian Sea is of US concern. For the US, this
hinges on the determination of the maritime borders of each country through bilateral agreements. Although the country claims to support the settlement of disputes,
the US is a biased party in the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, and in future should
not directly arbitrate as so to prevent further struggle, as in failed attempts to reconcile Azerbaijan and Ir, and Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Any external pressure on
the proposed pipeline in the region may encourage, further negotiation between
Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to come to an agreement about the ownership of the
ACG and the Kyapaz/Serdar Field. If they cannot be agreed on, the US should
encourage both sides to take the case to the International Courts for arbitration on a
division of the Southern Caspian that would be accepted by all involved parties
(Montgomery 2012:193).
Southern Gas Corridor
Early 2006 was a turning point of the EU’s energy policy for many reasons ranging
from the high price of Russian gas to Russian gas supply cuts to Ukraine, which had
