Of special interest with regard to tailoring the ligand shells are reactions that
enable the total replacement of one set of ligands with another [92–96]. These reactions also typically enable the transfer of nanocrystals from one phase to another.
A novel method of thiol-derivatizing hydrosols of metal sols has been developed by
Sarathy et al. [93, 94]. The procedure involves mixing vigorously a hydrosol containing metal particles of the desired size distribution with a toluene solution of
an alkane thiol in the presence of a strong acid or reducing agent. The com(a)
