e. Compare the surface area you calculated
in part (d) with that of 5 g of solid silver.
The density of silver (and other materials)
can be obtained from many reliable online
databases.
4. Consider the following materials. What is their
spatial dimensionality? Write a sentence justifying your assessment of
a. A molecule of double-stranded DNA.
b. A ZIF-8 metal-organic framework, which can
be used for adsorbing different kinds of gas
molecules.
c. A self-assembled monolayer of dye molecules anchored by thiol groups to a gold
surface.
d. Tobacco mosaic virus, a RNA virus that has
been used as a structural model for ordering
of molecules and considered as a possible
nanomaterial component due to its unusual
structure.
e. A lead sulfide quantum dot.
5. The vast majority of science publishing now
occurs online, whether through traditional subscription-based journals or online-only journals
that presents papers as soon as they have been
peer-reviewed and accepted. The change in
publication model from paper to online and the
sheer volume of publications has led to the
development of new methods of quickly finding
publications or works by particular researchers.
The digital object identifier (DOI) is now ubiquitous and provides an unambiguous way of
finding papers or other works that is independent of bibliography style systems and can be
generated before a paper has been assigned a
volume and page number. Try looking up the
following DOIs at http://dx.doi.org and briefly
summarize (1–2 sentences) what journal they
are from and what they are about.
a. 10.1021/nl0347334.
b. 10.1016/j.nanotod.2012.08.004.
c. 10.1126/science.1083842.
