African Energy Challenges in the Transition
Era: The Role of Regional Cooperation

2.1 Introduction
The world is transitioning to a low-carbon economy. However, the
energy challenges experienced on the African continent are yet to
be addressed. It has become a known fact that energy can be a
potent resource for fostering both Gross Domestic Growth (GDP)
and economic development in any resource-rich nation. For instance,
Britain’s energy from coal and Brazil’s investment in the biofuel sector has
been a landmark contributor to the industrial revolution and economic
development of both countries. These cases have shown that adequate
provision and use of energy services is an indication of enhanced
