The Emergence of New Climatic
Storms: Global Perspective
on the Application of Top-Down
and Bottom-Up Approaches
to Address Climate Change
Adaptation
Abstract
The youth are very vulnerable to the impact
of climate change, and it has affected every
aspect of their daily lives. This chapter utilises SWOT analysis tools to assess two
global case studies which apply top-down and
bottom-up approaches to climate change
adaptation. These include an analysis of bottom-up actions taken by the youth through the
Climate Strike Movement inspired by Greta
Thunberg to mobilise millions of people to
participate in marches to stop the use of fossil
fuel. The second case presents top-down
approach implemented by the Government of
Sierra Leone to enhance the capacity of tertiary/TVET institutions to deliver skills training through enhancing curriculum to build the
resilience of the youth to adapt to the impact
of climate change. It utilises the conceptual
framework on youth climate change adaptation to assess its applicability to the Youth
Employment and Entrepreneurship Project
(YEEP) in Sierra Leone. The author uses
SWOT analysis to asses both cases. Although
these cases were not part of the initial
research, the author felt that incorporating
them in the book will provide opportunities
for testing of the new conceptual framework
and for learning from the new knowledge
evolving from these cases.

global case studies on the actions taken by the
youth and government, respectively, to build the

to adapt to the impact of climate change. Although
these case studies were not part of the initial

these will provide more opportunities for reflection and learning.
Utilising the SWOT analysis tool and topdown/bottom-up approaches to climate change
adaptation, the strengths and weaknesses of the
Global Youth Climate Strike Movement influenced by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg will
be assessed. Issues/challenges associated with
the Youth Climate Strike Movement will be
explored by evaluating its operational mechanisms, mobilisation strategies and methodologies
as well as the use of social media to mobilise the
youth for global action. The global Climate Strike
