Polyurethanes
A material made of the alternated organic moiety and the
–NH(R)–C(O)O– group-of-atoms.
PPB
Part per billion, a unit of concentration of pollutants.
PPM
Part per million, a unit of concentration of pollutants.
Propagator
A center (catalyst) that propagates a reaction.
p-Type
An extrinsic semiconductor doped with electron acceptor
atoms.
Q
Quad-generation Evolution of co-generation biomass-based plant that merges
combined power, heat, cooling, and synthetic natural gas
production.
R
Radical
A species formed by homolytic cleavage of a covalent
bond. Radical anion is formed by transferring a single
electron to a neutral species, a radical cation is obtained by
taking a single electron from a neutral species.
Raman spectroscopy A spectroscopic technique used with apolar species
inactive in the infrared-IR. By inducing an asymmetry in
the species, it becomes IR-active.
Red mud
Mud formed in the treatment of bauxite (Aluminum ore).
The red color is caused by iron oxides present in the
bauxite.
Reforming
High-temperature treatment of coal or methane for making
Syngas, a mixture of H 2 and CO.
Renewable
That can be reformed in time, typical of biomass.
Sometimes, such adjective is used also with solar, wind,
hydro and geothermal energy, better qualified as perennial
energy sources.
Reverse WGS
The reverse of the water gas shift reaction, in which CO 2 is
reacted with hydrogen to produce CO and H 2 O.
S
Scattering
The process in which electromagnetic radiations or particles are deflected or diffused
Semiconductor
A material with intermediate properties between a metal
conductor and an insulator.
