20 Remediation
Fig. 20.2 Midtown Manhattan showing a few one square kilometer areas. Note the large number of
buildings that could require remediation (or demolition) in the event of an event that contaminated
an area of this size, as well as giving an idea the impact on transportation and business
to train new contractors in the appropriate regulatory issues and in good radiological
work practices. And this entire process will require regulatory oversight, which will
require a means of finding or training regulators capable of competently discharging
their responsibilities. All of this will be needed in order for residents to return to their
homes, workers to their jobs, and to reoccupy the contaminated areas.
For this reason, the New York City government collaborated with Brookhaven
National Laboratory to develop their three-volume Urban Remediation Response
(URR) project, developing a series of checklists designed to help remediation
contractors, property owners, and regulatory oversight personnel to understand their
respective responsibilities and perform them properly [9].
