5.9 Future of Navigation Satellite System
5.9.1 Application of Pulsar Navigation
The XPNAV is to realize the autonomous navigation of spacecrafts, which can
provide the navigation information services such as position, velocity, time and attitude for the spacecrafts in near-earth orbit, deep space and interstellar flight and
the rovers on the planetary surface without dense atmosphere. For the autonomous
navigation applications, if the autonomous navigation problem on the navigation
constellations can be solved first, then the users on the Earth’s surface and the spacecrafts in the LEO can use the GNSS for real-time and high-precision autonomous
navigation. In this way, the seamless navigation application system from the ground
users, LEO spacecrafts to MEO spacecrafts, HEO spacecrafts, deep space probes,
rovers on the planetary surface without dense atmosphere and interstellar vehicles
will be constructed by using the GNSS and XPNAV, as shown in Fig. 5.44. In addition, studies on the XPNAV and X-ray detection technologies will directly promote
the developments of interdisciplinary fields, such as physics, astronomy, electronic
science and technology, control science and engineering, aeronautic & astronautic
science and technology, as well as nuclear science and technology. So, the application fields of the XPNAV mainly include the autonomous navigation of navigation
constellation, deep-space exploration, interstellar flight, unified space-ground pulsar
timing system and interdisciplinary research.
The first application field is to realize the long-term and high-precision
autonomous navigation of navigation constellations. It is well known that the navigation satellite systems can proved all-weather, full-time, high-precision navigation information services for the users on the Earth’s surface and the spacecrafts
in the LEO, and have become an important space infrastructure, widely used in
