Chapter 5 aims to provide, in a nutshell, the historical and global developments in
experimental research in the field of halo nuclei and the most salient structural
features of neutron-rich halo nuclei which have emerged from the Radioactive Ion
Beam (RIB) facilities. The basic intention has been to provide the young and
uninitiated researcher the proper perspective before embarking upon more focused
theoretical work. We have primarily concentrated on the structural aspects of halo
nuclei. A vast and emerging field of nuclear reactions with loosely bound halo
nuclei has not been touched upon. However, we have briefly mentioned this field of
research in Chap. 5 and have provided useful references by leading practitioners in
the field. In spite of the best efforts of the authors, a technical monograph of this
nature is unlikely to be totally unblemished of errors, technical or typographical.
We would appreciate the attentive reader bringing to our notice any shortcoming of
this nature.
