4 Placing Integrated Development into the Business Perspective
• the application of integrated development within individual business processes,
including the creation of clearly defined tasks, competencies, and support by
specialists
• the institutional anchoring of suitable conditions and methods for integrated
development; examples are the principle of product stewardship 1 and tools such
as life cycle assessment, risk assessment, and risk-benefit dialogue with society
• an information and control system to continuously measure the efficiency and
success of integrated development efforts; it is helpful to quantify (to the extent
possible) the related risks, damages, and burdens, as well as the costs for
protection measures
• the use of quality and environmental management systems, e.g. according to
standards such as ISO 9000 and ISO 14000
4.3.3.3 Operational Level (III)
At the operational level, objectives are defined for the decentralized implementation
of the strategic goals in the individual business and project organizations. At
this stage, a broad implementation of integrated development and the relevant
management system takes place with the following elements:
• development of the organization to improve business processes in line with
strategic goals
• development of employees to promote competences through corporate coresponsibility as well as ongoing education and training
• development of improved technology, to have increasingly environmentally
responsible products and processes
• development of internal and external communication to promote acceptance
within society through ongoing dialogue with stakeholders
• monitoring progress to make business processes more effective and efficient
through regular comparisons with targets
To ensure that a management system is running effectively, it is important to
check and communicate its performance. Today this is commonly done through the
publication of an annual safety and environmental report that includes the set targets
as well as aggregated performance indicators as proof of the progress made toward
achieving them.
1 Product stewardship: Responsible product management that spans the entire life cycle of a
product, including especially use, recycling and disposal.
