Illustrative Case Study
10.1 Introduction
This chapter provides an illustrative case study using the plant protection product
line Bion ® produced by agrochemical company Syngenta. These products are used
to protect against fungal diseases in sunflowers, cereals, vegetables, and specialty
crops such as bananas. The active ingredient within Bion ® products is acibenzolarS-methyl (ASM) (CAS Registry Number 135158-54-2).
This case study provides exercises in the form of tasks that apply many of
the quantitative and qualitative aspects within life cycle assessment, product risk
assessment, process risk assessment, and thermal process safety introduced in the
earlier chapters. If worked through in a team and as a structured assignment with
a deliverable report and presentation, it aims to help develop multidisciplinary
professional teamwork, time management, and presentation skills required to work
on similar projects in the field.
Relevant data and references for working through the questions are provided;
however additional, supporting data can also be found in external sources. The
reader’s aim should be to work through each of the tasks with the help of the
guiding questions provided. It is important to document each step taken and be able
to make and justify any assumptions. A set of solutions are provided in Appendix G.
However, it is important to note that some of the tasks and specific questions have
no single correct answer and instead ask the reader to qualitatively assess a given
aspect. In such cases, the solutions provided give an example answer that covers the
key aspects but may not be the only solution. Due to the wide range of potential
data that could be used in some exercises, specific data sets have been provided.
This has simplified some of the calculations made here, and readers are encouraged
to explore the data sources on their own and consider how the use of alternative data
could affect the results.
