The following sections introduce each of the steps of product risk assessment and
provide an overview of their fundamental concepts and relevant equations.
6.3
Hazard Identification (Step 1)
The first step of the risk assessment involves identifying adverse effects that a
product has an inherent ability to cause. This step directly addresses the second
principle of integrated development: inherent safety (see Sect. 4.3.2). This is done
by collecting information on the types of effects that could occur to humans (such as
disease) or to the environment (such as harm to biota) as a result of exposure to the
product. Reviewing previous studies and accident records or running preliminary
toxicity tests can help identify these hazards. An overview of common hazards to
