2.6 Decay Scheme

is no equilibrium. The advantage of these types of equilibrium is that one can use
such conditions for measuring activities of radioactive materials, especially when
both the parent and daughter are radioactive materials. This aspect will be discussed
in a later chapter.
Summary
In this chapter, we discussed in detail all aspects of radioactivity, especially to
predict the decay of any radioactive material by the calculation based on mass
defect. Why a particular radioactive isotope decays only by a specific modes
of decay, what are the possible types of decays—these are also touched upon.
How the naturally occurring radioactive series and their classifications have
helped to predict the existence of some isotopes which we do not get these
days? The decay scheme of some specific examples is discussed to highlight
its importance. The advantages of knowing the half-life of the isotopes, mathematical interpretation of different types of equilibrium, and their advantages
are also dealt with.
