physics, explaining the advantages of including astrophysicists among their
teaching staff and the opportunities that would ensue to create departments
of astrophysics. I addressed university chancellors, directors general, and ministers on this issue.
Today, astrophysicists teach at a growing number of Spanish and foreign
universities (Chap. 24). I am sure that this group has been responsible for
firmly establishing astrophysics in universities in Spain and beyond.
Quantitative proof of this effort is the production of PhDs in astrophysics.
According to data provided by the Spanish Astronomical Society, 900 doctoral theses were read in Spain in the period 1969–2013; according to the
Postgraduate Teaching Division of the IAC, 347 were completed at the IAC
between 1969 and the present. The rate of increase has been gradual but
steady, from one (mine) in 1969 to the 43 in 2013. What might the future hold?
