I need to stress that, for obvious reasons, we wanted the main focus of the
teaching of astrophysics in the Canaries to be observational rather than theoretical. Indeed, the advantages of being able to carry out practicals at the IAC
Observatories are currently being enjoyed by other European universities in
collaboration with the University of La Laguna.
To give an idea of the astronomy being taught at Spanish universities in
that period, here is the programme of studies imparted at the University of
Zaragoza by Professor Cid Palacios:
