Astrophysics in Spain: The Wider Picture (1974–Present)
A general overview of modern astronomy in Spain is provided by F. Sánchez
and P. Murdin, ‘Spanish astronomy’, in P. Murdin (ed.), Encyclopedia of
Astronomy and Astrophysics (London: Institute of Physics, 2001). Iván
Fernández Pérez, Aproximación histórica al desarrollo de la astronomía en España
(University of Santiago de Compostela, 2009), ch. 3 and 4, gives a detailed
description of many of the observatories and research centres and university
departments that have arisen in Spain over the past half century. Enrique
García Gómez describes the history of astronomy in Toledo in Diez Siglos de
Ciencia y Científicos Toledanos (Ediciones Covarrubias, 2018). The importance
of EU funding for scientific cooperation among member states is covered by
F. Sánchez, ‘European Union funding stimulates cooperation among
European astronomers’, European Astronomical Society Newsletter, 9 (1994).
In celebration of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy the Revista
Española de Física of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics dedicated volume
23 of that publication to mark the event under the title ‘Año International de
la Astronomía’.
