Chapter 18
The Rise of Space Astrophysics in Spain (1942–Present)
The efforts of Spanish engineers to involve scientists in their space programmes
during the Franco era is described by Lino Caprubí, Engineers and the Making
of the Franco Regime (Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 2014). A brief overview
of Spain’s space activities is given in the doctoral thesis of Iván Fernández
Pérez, Aproximación histórica al desarrollo de la astronomía en España (University
of Santiago de Compostela, 2009). More detailed treatment is provided by
J. M. Dorado, M. Bautista, and P. Sanz Aránguez, Spain in Space: A Short
History of Spanish Activity in the Space Sector (Nordwijk: ESA, 2002);
F. González, ‘La entrada de España en la Era Espacial: La instalación de la
estación de seguimiento de satélites en el Observatorio de San Fernando
(1956–1958)’, in M. Vallejo (ed.), Jornadas Científicas 250 años de Astronomía
en España (San Fernando: Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada, 2003);
J. M. Sánchez Ron, ‘Terradas y la aeronáutica’, Revista Quark, 31, (2004),
71–7; and J. M. Sánchez Ron, 50 años de ciencia y técnica aeroespacial
(Aranjuez: Ministerio de Defensa, 1997).
Chapter 20
Bringing Astronomy to the Public (1986–Present)
Ample details of the IAC’s extensive outreach programme are given on the
Institute’s webpage: www.iac.es.
Chapter 21
The Biggest, Most Advanced Telescope in the World
(1989–Present)
A general overview of the GTC is given by F. Sánchez, ‘Gran Telescopio
Canarias’ in Future Large Scale Facilities in Astronomy, 23rd meeting of the
IAU, Joint Discussion 9 1(997), A full description of every aspect of the
design of the GTC, together with a summary of the site selection campaign,
is given in P. Álvarez Martín et al., Gran Telescopio CANARIAS: Conceptual
